It was from two of my students who happen to own and run a bakery. Surprise surprise, I’m actually a teacher. I teach basic photography and food photography at our little school called <a href="http://www.50feasts.com/">50 Feasts</a>. But anyway, as soon as I set my eyes on this cake, I couldn’t get myself to eat it without taking a photo first.</p> <p>I wanted to surprise them with this photo so I didn’t get to ask what the name of the cake was. I took the liberty to name it myself just for this blog entry. I called it “The Campfire Cake”, works right? The Campfire Cake is made of roasted marshmallows on a bed of rich chocolate ganache crusted with crushed grahams. It’s such a feast for both the eyes and your sweet tooth. But in reality, it’s is just an excuse to feature some of the things that caught my eye among this year’s round-up of kitchenware and accessories from a few of my favorite brands. This is just the first of many more, since if I were to include everything here, it might take forever to list them.</p> <p><em>1) First on the list is this really cute ceramic basket. It’s actually a ceramic version of the carton box they use to sell blueberries with in the markets. They have it five different colors! How cool is that!</em></p> <p><em>2) A cookie/loose tea jar. I was specifically attracted to the embossed flower patterns on the surface! It’s beautiful!</em></p> <p><em>3) Glass candle holders with paper slips, I really want to make one when I get the time; the cutlery set on the side is a beautiful piece from Terrain, I forgot to put a number on it.<br/></em></p> <p><em>4) A table napkin featuring the four seasons of the year. I love the color palette.</em></p> <p><em>5) I need an apron. I hate washing the dishes and having my shirt all drenched. But what I really want is this checkered apron from Muji. Sad that it costs P1,450.</em></p> <p><em>6) A </em><em>ceramic </em><em>baby milk powder container. It’s such a waste for anyone to actually use this thing. But it would look cute on display in a nursery.</em></p> <p><em>7) Can you believe that these 5 wooden animal figures can fit in each of your five fingers!</em></p> <p><em>8) These are coasters. I wish they come up with chopping boards of the same concept.</em></p> <p><em>9) A slender karaff with a custom fit wooden wrap. urgh it’s just sooo pretty!</em></p> <p><em>10) I love how the Japanese drink can was turned into a holder of utensils. Smart idea.</em></p> <p><em>11) I’m totally biased over earthen wares that look like they’ve just been shipped straight off the potter’s.</em></p> <p><em>12) Guess what this is? A thin wooden boat tray! Entering Muji’s new branch in Greenbelt was a bad idea, I never leave the place without buying a thing or two. Ended up buying a tray, some wooden bowls and heat resistant glass mugs. Merry Christmas to me!</p> <p>This layout is my personal tribute to Muji for coming up with such amazing products I can never keep my hands off. The Kanji text is supposed to say “Love Muji” but I’m not entirely sure because my Japanese is really just limited to google translate or words they constantly repeat in anime!(lol) Since I’ve been planning to make onigiri for lunch today anyway, I figured it’d be such a waste not to shoot them all together.</p> <p>Onigiri made out of plain steamed rice is just too bland for me so I made my version with some sushi rice instead. </p> <p><em>Sushi Rice Onigiri Recipe:</em><br/><em>1 cup Japanese Rice</em><br/><em>2 cups water</em><br/><em>1 tbsp sugar</em><br/><em>1/3 tsp Salt</em><br/><em>3 tbsp rice vinegar</em><br/><em>nori sheets</em></p> <p><em>Cook the rice with 2 cups water(you will want it really sticky). Stir the rice vinegar, salt, and sugar together and slowly mix it in with the rice once it’s cooked. Wet your hands and start shaping your rice balls. I filled in my onigiri with store bought salted fish flakes. Some fill it with pickled plums or tuna with mayonnaise. Remember to let it cool down for a while before you attach the nori or else the nori will turn soggy.
